A Joker sequel is in the works as was confirmed by director Todd Phillips.

The first film starred Joaquin Phoenix and did very well at the box office, earning over 1 billion dollars worldwide. It was set as a standalone DC film (not set in the DCEU) and it actually seemed unlikely that there would be a sequel given the way the film ended.

Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Joker in this film and he became the second actor to win the Oscar for portraying Joker. Heath Ledger won it as well in 2008 for his role in The Dark Knight.

The working title of this sequel implies that there are two “Jokers” involved. Either we see a copycat younger Joker or we see Harley Quinn. Joaquin Phoenix is in contract negotiations to return in the sequel.
